Big Island Saturday severe weather updates: Flood advisory extended to include entire island
Update at 2:21 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026: A new flood advisory is now in place until 5 a.m. Saturday, April 11, for the entire Big Island because of excessive rainfall.
Flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams, which also are already elevated, can be expected.
National Weather Service radar and automated rain gauges indicated at 1:47 a.m. Saturday moderate to heavy rain falling at 0.5 to 1.5 inches an hour over the Big Island.
This advisory replaces the previous advisory that was in effect for the western slopes of the island.
Story originally posted at 12:19 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026: National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a flood advisory in effect until 2:45 a.m. Saturday, April 11, because of excessive rainfall along the western slopes of the Big Island.
Radar and automated rain gauges indicated at shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, that heavy rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour over western slopes from Upolu Point to Kona and to South Point.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Waikoloa Village, Kapaau, Hōlualoa, Honalo, Puʻu Anahulu, Kāʻināliu, Kahaluʻu-Keauhou, Kalaʻoa, Kealakekua, Pōhakuloa Training Area, Hōnaunau, Puakō, Kawaihae, Waimea, Kohala Ranch, Pololū Valley, Hala‘ula and Hāwī.
Flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas as well as streams can be expected. Some low-water crossings could become impassable. River and stream flows also are already elevated.
The public should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
A flood watch also remains in effect through Saturday morning for the Big Island.
