Volcano ‘warning’ for Kīlauea prompts ashfall concerns for Hilo, Hamakua
Authorities on Thursday raised the alert level for Kīlauea Volcano to warning status as an eruption was believed to be imminent or already underway, prompting closures and safety advisories across parts of Hawai’i Island.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory upgraded the volcano’s status to “WARNING” at approximately 1 p.m. on April 9, indicating a hazardous eruption could be occurring or expected soon.
The National Weather Service also issued an ashfall warning, cautioning that volcanic ash could affect air quality and visibility in surrounding areas.
Officials with the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park have said the park will remain closed until further notice. In addition, a stretch of Highway 11 is shut down at mile markers 25.5 and 40 due to safety concerns.
Residents in nearby communities have been urged to limit outdoor exposure. Ashfall is possible in Hilo and across the Hamakua District.
Emergency Management officials will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as conditions change.
