Pāhoa Community Aquatic Center reopens this week after 5-week closure
Hawai‘i County Parks and Recreation reports Pāhoa Community Aquatic Center reopens Monday (March 2) after a 5-plusweek closure because of volcanic material accumulating in the swimming pool.

The pool at William “Billy” Kenoi District Park was shuttered Jan. 24 when tephra — volcanic material including ash and volcanic glass Pele’s hair — from Episode 41 of the ongoing episodic summit eruption of Kīlauea volcano was carried by wind, making its way into the facility and surrounding areas.
Hawai‘i County hired a licensed pool contractor for a thorough cleaning of the entire facility to ensure public safety and protect the integrity of the pool’s circulation and filtration systems.
The project is complete, and the pool is set to resume normal operations.
