Waipi‘o Valley Road will be closed to all traffic between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day from Feb. 24 through Feb. 27 as a geophysical survey is conducted.

The survey, which will look at the subsurface conditions of the road, is being done by Geolabs, Inc. as part of the Waipi‘o Valley Road Safety Improvement project. The closure will occur between the Waipi‘o Valley lookout and the beach access road.

The county began work to improve the safety of the steep and rural road that leads down to one of the most beloved and sacred spaces on Hawai‘i Island. The first phase of the project was done in 2023, which consisted of removing hazards along the upper portions of the road.

The county has moved onto planning and design phases two and three, which involve removing additional hazards and installing rockfall mitigation along the slope.
