The funding will be used for construction of the new Hawaiʻi Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce facility, which will serve as a hub for cultural preservation, educational programming and community gatherings.

The project is funded through general obligation bonds, as well, and qualifies under HHawaiʻi law for the grant.

“Mahalo to Gov. Green and his administration for releasing these funds and for their continued support of projects that preserve culture and strengthen our communities,” said Big Island state Sen. Lorraine Inouye in announcing the funding.

She added that this investment demonstrates the state’s ongoing commitment to community-driven infrastructure that honors the state’s diverse cultures while advancing a stronger Hawaiʻi for kūpuna, keiki and all residents in between.

“By continuing to work together, we can promote long-term sustainability and ensure our islands remain a place that future generations will choose to call home,” said Inouye’s announcement.
