Speed limit change now in effect on Airport Road in Hilo

A speed limit change in East Hawai‘i around the Hilo International Airport is now in effect to maintain safety and to keep traffic flowing efficiently.

Crews installed the new speed limit signs Tuesday, according to a press release from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.

Speed limit changes on various sections of Kekūanāoʻa Street, also known as Airport Road, range from 15 mph to 35 mph, according to the state agency.

Upon approach to the airport terminal, the speed limit changed from 25 mph to 35 mph after the first crossing with Kekūanāoʻa Place, before returning to 25 mph after the second crossing with Kekūanāoʻa Place.

The speed limit on Airport Road exiting the terminal area changed from 15 mph to 25 mph.

The speed limit within the main airport terminal area remains at 15 mph to ensure the safety of travelers and airport employees.
