HFS Federal Credit Union offers $60,000 in scholarships this year to Big Island students

HFS Federal Credit Union’s commitment to people helping people extends to every milestone — big or small — in the lives of its members.

That includes offering solutions to the ever-increasing cost of higher education and challenges students face in acquiring the necessary funds for college expenses.

Applications for the 2026 HFS Scholarship Program are now being accepted online from current Big Island high school students in the class of 2026 and college students.

The credit union will award a total of $60,000 to 20 qualified applicants this year — 10 to graduating Big Island high school seniors and 10 to current college students.

Each will receive a $3,000 scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year.

HFS student members pursuing higher education full-time at an accredited 2- or 4-year vocational-technical school, college or university during the 2026-27 academic year are eligible to apply.

Recipients will be selected based on a variety of criteria including academic performance, achievements and community service.

Prior scholarship recipients are not eligible.

Completed applications with supporting documents must be submitted online no later than Feb. 28.

HFS has helped since 2012 relieve some of the financial stress that comes with pursuing a college degree by awarding more than 130 scholarships to student members, totaling more than $355,000.

Previous recipients have returned to the Big Island to serve as positive community contributors and leaders.
