UPDATE: Flood advisory previously in effect for leeward portions of Big Island canceled

Update at 7:11 p.m. Jan. 6, 2026: The flood advisory previously in effect until 8:30 p.m. for portions of leeward Big Island was canceled by forecasters at the National Weather Service Honolulu office.
Radar showed at about 6:30 p.m. that heavy rain over the area diminished. Flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.
Original story published at 5:50 p.m. Jan. 6, 2026: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu issued a flood advisory for portions of West Hawai’i in effect until 8:15 p.m. today (Jan. 6) because of excessive rainfall moving over the area.
Radar indicated at 5:04 p.m. that heavy rain — falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour, with the heaviest showers along and just upslope of Māmalahoa Highway — over parts of leeward Big Island, from Waikōloa south to Hōnaunau.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Hōlualoa, Honalo, Kalaʻoa, Kahaluʻu-Keauhou, Kāʻināliu, Puʻu Anahulu, Kealakekua, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Waikōloa, Mauna Lani and Miloliʻi.
Expect flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas as well as streams.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
