‘No parking’ signs go up by new development along busy roadway in Kona
For safety reasons, the Hawaiʻi County Council moved forward a bill that restricts parking on a busy thoroughfare in Kailua-Kona.
Bill 109, introduced Tuesday during the county council’s Policy Committee on Public Works and Mass Transit, would end parking on Hina Lani Street for about a three-mile stretch, from Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway to Anini Street.
Council Member Holeka Inaba introduced the measure to ensure safety at the newly built 99-unit Kauhale i Ke Kula Uka development, located at 73-4515 Hina Lani St.
Cars have been parking along Hina Lani, causing issues for motorists entering and exiting there, Inaba said in an email to Big Island Now on Tuesday.
“Some have begun to set up make-shift garages in the area, so this bill will help HPD to enforce easier,” Inaba said.
The Hawai‘i County Department of Public Works installed “No Parking” signs a few weeks before Inaba’s bill was introduced in committee.
The bill was given a favorable recommendation with seven votes in favor and will move to the full council for further discussion in the next two weeks. Council Members Matt Kaneali‘i-Kleinfelder and Rebecca Villegas were absent.
