UPDATE: Water main break repairs completed in Āhualoa-Paʻauilo Mauka area

Update 12:08 p.m. Nov. 18, 2025: Repairs have been completed to the water main break in the Āhualoa-Paʻauilo Mauka area, restoring water service to all affected customers.

Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply apologizes for the extended service interruption, and thanks customers for their patience and understanding while repairs were made.

Update, 2 p.m., Nov. 17: The Hawaiʻi County Department of Water is continuing to search for a remote water main break that has left customers from Āhualoa to Pa‘auilo Mauka with little or no water since the outage was first reported at around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday.

The break is suspected to be somewhere along Pa‘auilo Mauka Road between Kalōpā Mauka Road and Pōhākea Road, with additional impacts on Kalehua Road, Kahana Drive east of Kalehua Road, and nearby side roads.

The Deparment of Water added on Monday that crews are still trying to pinpoint the source of the failure in an area that is difficult to access.

Repairs will begin once the damaged line is found.

A water tanker was placed at the Harada tank site on the corner of Kalehua Road and Kahana Drive last night to provide temporary water for residents.

Residents are asked to bring their own water containers.

Original Post: According to the Hawai‘i County Department of Water Supply, a water main break in Pa‘auilo Mauka has caused some residents to have reduced or no water.

At around 8:45 p.m., officials from the Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply reported the water main break. The break is believed to be in a remote area of Pa‘auilo Mauka Road, between Kalōpā Mauka Road and Pōhākea Road.

Due to safety concerns, crews are unable to access the site overnight.

Water crews plan to begin searching for the damaged line at daybreak on Nov. 17, with repairs to follow once the exact location is identified. All nearby side roads and surrounding areas in Hāmākua are also affected by the outage.
