Kēōkea Beach Park in North Hawaiʻi has been reopened after follow-up testing confirmed that water quality levels are safe.

Last Thursday, the Hawai‘i State Department of Health issued an advisory after detecting higher-than-normal levels of bacteria.

On Sept. 23, following retesting, health officials issued a press release stating that enterococci bacteria levels had decreased below the safety threshold, so the initial notification was rescinded.

For further information on Hawaiiʻs high bacteria count notification, visit the department’s Clean Water Branch website. Or visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website to learn more about how high bacteria levels can affect human health.
