Water customers from Hāwī to Hala‘ula now under essential needs only notice for water use
North Kohala water customers from Hāwī to Hala‘ula are now under an essential needs only notice for water use — and will be for at least the foreseeable future — as only one well remains operational in the area and high water usage has caused customers to have no water or low water pressure.

The notice also includes Puakea Bay, Ka‘auhuhu Homesteads, ‘Āinakea Village and all customers along Akoni Pule Highway, Mill Road and Ma‘ulili Road.
Essential needs include drinking, cooking and hygiene purposes.
Hāwī No. 1 well is the only operational well in the area at the moment. Hawai‘i County Department of Water Supply authorized emergency repairs on Hāwī No. 2 well, with mobilization of the contractor’s equipment and materials anticipated to begin as soon as today.
Hāwī No. 2 well could be repaired tentatively by mid to late next week.
Private water-hauling trucks were contracted by the county Water Supply Department to bring water from another public water systems to supplement what is available in North Kohala water tanks.
A water tanker also is stationed at the Hawi Road and Kohala Mountain Road intersection for the public’s use.
“[Department of Water Supply] thanks affected customers for their understanding and kōkua,” the department said in its announcement of the essential needs only notice.
