With high school graduations and Memorial Day this weekend, Hawai‘i Island police reminds the public to make responsible choices on the road and not drink and drive.

In 2024, Hawai‘i County experienced a tragic surge in traffic fatalities, with 29 lives lost — nearly double the 15 fatalities in 2023. Impaired driving was a significant factor, contributing to many of these deaths, according to police officials.

The Hawai‘i Police Department arrested 964 individuals for driving under the influence in 2024, a slight increase from the previous year. Additionally, 277 impaired drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and 71 were under the age of 21.

This Memorial Day, police urge motorists to commit to driving sober.

“If you’re impaired, don’t drive. Designate a sober driver, use a ride-sharing service, or stay where you are,” officials stated.

The Hawai‘i Police Department will be conducting DUI checkpoints and patrols island-wide to ensure everyone’s safety.
