Final phases of repaving project for Māmalahoa Highway in Kona to begin
One of the last two phases of a repaving project for Māmalahoa Highway in Kona on the west side of the Big Island is scheduled to begin next week, with the the final segment of the project to be underway by mid-June.
Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works announced Tuesday:
- Resurfacing of about 3 miles of the highway, from Kalamauka Road to Ha‘awina Street, begins May 19. This segment of the project is anticipated to be completed Oct. 2.
- Resurfacing work on the last about 3 miles of the project, from Palani Road to Kamalani Street, is slated to begin June 18 and be finished by Nov. 26.
Work includes resurfacing and striping those portions of the highway, sign and pedestrian crossing improvements as well as adjustments to manhole frames, utility valves, meter box covers and drainage frames.
Crews with contractor Isemoto Contracting will work 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
Shifting lane closures will be in effect during work hours. Flaggers will be present to help manage traffic flow.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution through the work zone.
The project started with resurfacing a segment of the highway from Kamalani Street to Kalamauka Road, with that portion expected to be finihsed by the end of this month.
A total of about 9 miles of Māmalahoa Highway will be repaved through this project at an estimated cost of $5 million.
