Update at 4:43 a.m. April 18: Additional snow accumulation of up to 2 inches is forecast for Big Island summits as the winter weather advisory for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa has been extended until 6 a.m. Saturday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu say travel could be very difficult in the summit regions, with blowing snow significantly reducing visibility at times, including periods of zero visibility.

A slow-moving upper-level trough will move through the islands today through Friday, bringing periods of snow to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. A winter weather advisory will be in place starting at noon.

Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected on summits above 11,000 feet.

Those traveling on Daniel K. Inouye Highway during that time could see slippery roads due to periods of sleet or freezing rain.
