Hawaiʻi County hosted its first Creative Media Summit on March 27 at The Arc of Hilo, bringing together a dynamic mix of creatives, media professionals, educators, industry leaders, nonprofits and small businesses.

Co-hosted by Office of Hawaiʻi County Council member Ashley Kierkiewicz of Puna, Hawaiʻi County Department of Research and Development and Office of Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda, the summit served as a launchpad for advancing the Big Island’s creative economy.

“Hawai‘i Island is rich with creative talent, and our artists, storytellers, and media professionals are eager to build careers here at home and contribute to our local economy,” said Kierkiewicz in information about the summit after it was conducted. “The summit was about harnessing that energy, forging connections and taking the creative industries to the next level.”

She added it was a critical step in aligning a vision, identifying resources and committing to action to drive the island’s creative industry forward.

“The success of this summit signals the emergence of a new and exciting industry that will engage our young people, spotlight our local creativity and establish a new economic driver for Hawai’i County,” said Research and Development Director Benson Medina.

The event featured a compelling keynote address by Tui Scanlan, president of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 665 Worker Union.

Attendees participated in interactive breakout sessions focused on media career pathways, workforce development and addressing the community’s media needs.

A live survey captured industry insights, and the Hawai‘i Island Creative Industries Index was launched to foster collaboration and provide direct access to local talent.

One of the summit’s major outcomes will be the development of a Collective Action Roadmap, outlining concrete strategies and next steps to support local creators and invest in the infrastructure needed for a thriving creative sector.

Immediate next steps include formalizing the Creative Industries Index, coordinating mentorship and internship opportunities as well as conducting regular networking events to strengthen industry connections.
