Taking a stand: Nationwide grassroots initiative organizes protests against Trump policies
Fifty protests in 50 states during 1 day. Grassroots initiative The 50501 Movement is taking a stand throughout the nation, including in Hawai‘i and on the Big Island, against what it considers harmful federal policies.
Protests are being organized Feb. 5 in all 50 states to mobilize Americans in opposition to “harmful policies of Project 2025 and the Trump Administration” the movement claims threaten fundamental freedoms and human rights.
“Protesters will unite to defend democracy and advocate for a wide range of causes including freedom of speech, racial equality, women’s rights, [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, plus] rights, public health, climate action, gun violence prevention and wealth equity,” said The 50501 Movement in announcing its planned protests.
One of the protest sites is in Kailua-Kona on the west side of the Big Island.
The peaceful protest is set to begin at 5 p.m. Feb. 5 along Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway, south of Henry Street, near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints temple.
“Join us … in Kona, Hawai‘i, for a peaceful protest in advocacy for our climate, women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ+, diversity and inclusion,” wrote Anne Catlin of Kailua-Kona in a post on the Facebook event page for the event.
Supporters from throughout the islands also are invited to unite in this nationwide movement at noon in Honolulu at the state Capitol.
