Update: Vector control at Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area not for little fire ants

Update at 12:29 p.m. Feb. 4: Hawaiʻi County clarified on Tuesday morning that vector control operations earlier today at Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area off Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road, involved treatment for Argentine ants, not little fire ants as previously reported.

No little fire ants have been detected at the park.

Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area was temporarily closed Tuesday morning for vector control. It has since reopened.

Original post from 3:29 p.m. Feb. 3: The Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area will be closed from 4 a.m. to noon on Tuesday for little fire ant treatment.

Residents are asked to plan to travel through the area knowing that the public restrooms and amenities at the park will not be available during treatment hours.
