Detailed Forecast
Synopsis
Fair trade wind weather builds in for the weekend and continues into next week.
Discussion
Much drier air characterized by dewpoints in the 50s will settle over Kauai and Oahu tonight and the remainder of the island over the weekend as moderate post-frontal NW flow gradually transitions to trades. Stable, breezy trades become established through the first half of next week as progressive high pressure migrates eastward across the Pacific Basin. Trades then weaken during the latter half of the week in response to renewed mid-level troughing.
Aviation
Showers along a convergence band have been decreasing across the Big Island, while stalled front near Kauai weakens. AIRMET Sierra is posted for tempo mountain obscurations above 3000 feet over the Big Island. Expect this AIRMET to continue into the evening hours before the clouds and showers dissipate, and will likely go away later tonight or early Saturday morning. All other AIRMETs have been cancelled. Dry air with light winds will usher in from the west through Saturday with no new AIRMETs are anticipated.
Marine
A cold front over the Kauai Channel, associated with a low (988 mb) pressure passing to the N, will continue to move E through tonight before stalling and dissipating near the Big Island Saturday. The threat of thunderstorms have decreased during the day today with mainly showers expected over the eastern half of the state tonight and likely lingering around the Big Island waters through Saturday. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect through tonight for many zones exposed to the NW swell due to seas of 10 feet or greater. Although seas should gradually decrease tonight, seas will likely remain at SCA thresholds for select waters on Saturday.
By Saturday morning, the front is expected to be near the Big Island with gentle to moderate NW winds expected over most of the state on Saturday. High pressure building far NW of the state should bring the return of moderate northerly trades on Sunday veering slightly more easterly and strengthening to locally strong speeds by Monday afternoon into Tuesday.
A new shorter-period NW to NNW (310 to 340 degree) swell quickly filled in during the day today, while the long- period N (010 degrees) swell gradually faded during the day. Surf should hold at advisory thresholds through tonight then likely drop below advisory thresholds on Saturday. Locally generated wind waves out of the S and W will gradually diminish through tomorrow. Another N swell will arrive Sunday and peak Monday, producing high surf along N facing shores. A couple moderate sized WNW swells are also expected, with a smaller one this weekend, and a slightly larger one from Monday into Wednesday with the peak on Tuesday.
