Detailed Forecast
Synopsis
Stable and dry conditions accompanied by light winds prevail through the weekend.
Discussion
Little change for the next several days as the islands remain equatorward of a strong and zonally extended Pacific jet. This places the islands within a corridor of deep layer subsidence, though rather low in magnitude owing to the flat nature of the mid- level storm track. Light winds favoring a land and sea breeze pattern will prevail through at least Saturday and likely into Sunday as the trade wind belt is confined to the equatorial latitudes. A ribbon of very shallow moisture will linger over the western end of the state during this time bringing afternoon clouds and very spotty light showers to interior Kauai and Oahu. The land breeze will then bring clear skies and dry conditions each night through early morning.
Guidance indicates a kink in the jet forming early next week resulting in a transient period of amplified mid-level ridging. Subsequent strengthening of the surface high around 30N will bring brief return to a typical breezy trade wind pattern early next week before the gradient potentially weakens once again.
Aviation
Light winds will allow development of land breezes tonight and seas breezes tomorrow afternoon. Increased SHRA coverage is possible across the western end of the state this evening as a front approaches from the north. SHRA should be light, but MVFR conditions are possible at times within them. VFR conditions will prevail.
No AIRMETs are in effect and none are expected through tonight.
Marine
A weak but fast moving high pressure system west-northwest of the islands is pushing a decaying cold front over the western end of the state this afternoon. Light and variable winds are becoming more northerly, and then are expected to give way to light easterly flow on Friday. As a ridge moves back over the islands Friday night through Sunday, expect more gentle and variable winds. Fresh trade winds look to redevelop Sunday night or Monday.
A series of large to extra large northwest to north-northwest swells generated by several storm-force lows passing northwest of Hawaii will continue through the weekend, peaking on Sunday. This afternoon, the PacIOOS buoys at Hanalei and Waimea have risen to about 15 feet as a new northwest reinforcement moves through the islands. Based on the latest buoy observations, surf along north facing shores has been bumped up slightly from the previous forecast, but the overall forecast philosophy remains unchanged. The High Surf Warning (HSW) for most north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai and north facing shores of Maui has been extended through early Saturday morning. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory (HSA) has been issued for west facing shores of the Big Island, as the long period northwest energy is expected to reach Big Island this evening.
Several overlapping northwest (320 to 330 degrees) swells will keep surf near or above HSW levels most of the time through the weekend. Therefore, the HSW will likely be extended beyond its current expiration time of Saturday morning. The latest guidance continues to show the largest swell arriving on Sunday with extra-large to giant surf possible on Sunday along north facing shores. While winds will remain rather light through the weekend, seas will be above the 10 foot Small Craft Advisory threshold for most waters, and the Small Craft Advisory that was previously in effect has been expanded to nearly all coastal waters this afternoon (and will likely need to be extended in time as well).
Aside from areas exposed to wrapping northwest swell, surf along east and south facing shores will remain small through much of the week.
Fire weather
No fire weather concerns through the forecast period as winds remain sufficiently light and RH elevated.
