Over 100 caregivers learn tools at resource fair in South Kona to help aging loved ones
More than 100 caregivers from across Hawai‘i Island gathered in South Kona to learn more about what tools are available to them to help support their loved ones and themselves.
The second annual Empowering Family Caregiver Resource Fair hosted by Kona Community Hospital was held on Saturday at Yano Hall. Health care professionals did presentations on a wide range of caregiving topics, from recognizing dementia-related behaviors to understanding the importance of advance health care directives, wills and trusts, according to a press release from the Kona hospital.
Attendees also gained practical insights, including tips on safe lifting techniques to assist loved ones with mobility challenges.
“I came because I was looking for directives being a caregiver. I didn’t want to feel stuck, constantly asking questions without knowing where to turn,” said Shanette Ramos of Waikōloa, who attended the event with her mom. “I left with more information than I expected, and now I have additional resources to help me become a better caregiver for my mom.”
In addition to information sessions, caregivers were able to connect with community partners and resources like Hawai‘i Community Caregiver Network, AARP, and the Mālama Kūpuna Program. A limited number of Emergency Medical Folders were distributed, providing caregivers with a centralized place to store vital health information for their loved ones.
“We’re proud to support caregivers in our community with this annual event,” said Melanie Alcain, Education Coordinator at Kona Community Hospital. “There is a significant gap in awareness of the free community resources available to caregivers, who play a crucial role in supporting our most vulnerable populations. We bring all these resources together in one place, at one time, to better support caregivers in their journey.”
Organizers encourage anyone who missed the event to stay connected with Kona Community Hospital for information on future caregiver workshops and resources.
