Hilo and Kona Districts tie for most DUI arrests, according to weekly report

Hilo and Kona were tied for the most DUI arrests during the week of Sept. 16 through Sept. 22.

Twenty-six motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant with nine in Kona and Hilo, six in Puna and four in South Kohala, according to data released by the Hawai‘i Island police. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 720 DUI arrests compared with 698 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.2%.

Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 719 major crashes so far this year, compared with 620 during the same time last year, an increase of 19.4%.

To date, there have been 20 fatal crashes, resulting in 22 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 deaths for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 81.8% for fatal crashes and 83.3% for fatalities.

In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
