Minor coastal flooding anticipated throughout Hawaiian Islands
Updated 7:40 p.m.: The National Weather Service has extended its minor coastal flooding alert for the Big Island until Tuesday afternoon.
Original post: High tide through Monday is expected to bring minor coastal flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, peak monthly high tides combined with water levels that are running higher than predicted will lead to minor flooding along the shoreline and in low-lying coastal areas.
Coastal flooding is possible around the daily peak tide, which will be between the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Impacts include flooded beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion and saltwater inundation of low-lying roads, docks, boat ramps and other coastal infrastructure.
Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded roadways. If you are forced to drive through salt water, be sure to rinse your vehicle with fresh water.
Owners of properties in low-lying shoreline areas or near waterways should consider moving any electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground. Monitor vessels to ensure mooring lines don’t get too tight and watch out for overwash around boat ramps.
Secure canoes or other watercraft stowed on beaches.
