Volunteers and members of Big Island nonprofit Hilo Bayfront Trails on Sunday restriped the
longest and oldest segment of the Hilo Bayfront Trail, which stretches from the
Mo’oheau Bandstand to Pauahi Street.

Hilo Bayfront Trails advocates for bicycle and pedestrian safety on the Big Island. The group teamed up with non-acoholic beer company Athletic Brewing and the county of Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Department to clean and restripe the trail.

Future events will target the trail’s Pauahi Street to Canoe Halau section and the bayfront soccer field sections.

The Hilo Bayfront Trail, a popular recreational path for both residents and visitors, has seen increased use in recent years.

Hilo Bayfront Trail is the nexus of a larger plan, in conjunction with the county of Hawai‘i,
the General Plan 2045 and the state of Hawai‘i to bring safe routes for bicycles and
pedestrians to the Big Island.

These plans include safe routes to school, for recreation, commuting and dual access emergency roads that also meet the needs of bicycle and pedestrian access during non-emergency periods.
