Detailed Forecast

Synopsis

A high pressure system well north of the Hawaiian Islands will maintain moderate to breezy trade winds through much of the week. Heading into the weekend and beyond, weather conditions across the state will be highly dependent on any potential tropical cyclone development near the islands.

Discussion

Radar and satellite imagery show some clouds isolated showers moving into windward and mountain areas across the state this afternoon, as well as some clouds building up over leeward Big Island and a few other leeward locations. High pressure well to the north of the state will maintain moderate to breezy trades across the region through Thursday. With some drier air upstream, shower coverage through Thursday will be a little less than what we've seen earlier in the week, but scattered to occasionally numerous showers will still favor windward and mountain areas, particularly during the overnight to early morning periods, with more isolated activity expected each afternoon.
Beyond Thursday, forecast confidence remains on the lower end of the scale due to some potential tropical cyclone development in the Eastern and Central Pacific. In addition to T.S. Gilma currently in the Eastern Pacific, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center is watching two other areas of low pressure in the Eastern Pacific for potential tropical cyclone development that may move into the Central Pacific basin over the next day or two. Global models are having a hard time resolving the potential development, track, and intensity of any of these systems, giving us very little forecast confidence in regards to any potential impacts to the Hawaiian Islands. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center is closely monitoring the Central Pacific basin, so stay tuned for frequent updates at www.hurricanes.gov.
Regardless of any potential tropical cyclone development over the next several days, now is a good time to make sure that you and your family are prepared for hurricane season. For more information on how to prepare, visit weather.gov/safety/hurricane- plan.

Aviation

Moderate to locally breezy trades will persist through tonight with scattered showers mainly over windward and mountain areas. Brief MVFR conditions will be possible with any showers, but generally VFR conditions should prevail. Trade winds are expected to strengthen slightly on Wednesday.
No AIRMETs are in effect. But AIRMET Tango may be needed to account for moderate low level turb downwind of the terrain of all islands on Wednesday.

Marine

Moderate to fresh trades continue through today strengthen to locally strong for the remainder of the week in response to high pressure expanding into the area. The Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect for the typical windier waters of Maui County and the Big Island until early Thursday morning. It will likely be expanded in coverage as trade winds strengthen during the second half of the week. There is a high probability that a tropical cyclone will develop in the vicinity of 140W longitude this week and track toward the islands late this week through the weekend. In such a scenario, conditions would be quite windy with gales possible within the channels. The marine forecast will be highly dependent on this system's exact track and evolution both of which remain more uncertain than normal at this time.
Long period energy out of the NW quadrant (300 degrees) is propagating toward the islands at press time and is modeled to reach NDBC Buoy 51001 before midnight HST tonight. Moderate surf will quickly manifest along north and west facing exposures late tonight, peaking Wednesday into early Thursday, then gradually fading during the proceeding days.
A small, medium period S swell has peaked today and will gradually diminish during the mid-week period. Short period surf along E facing shores remains somewhat small today but will increase as trades strengthen Wednesday through the remainder of the week.
Due to the current water levels still running around a half of a foot above prediction, minor tidal flooding is still possible again during this afternoon's high tides.

HFO Watches/Warnings/Advisories

Small Craft Advisory until 6 AM HST Thursday for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward Waters, Big Island Southeast Waters.
