16 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Aug. 5-11 on Big Island roads
Police continue their crackdown on those who choose to drive on Big Island roadways while under the influence of an intoxicant, arresting 16 motorists for DUI during the week of Aug. 5-11.
Seven of those motorists were involved in traffic crashes. Two of them were younger than 21 years old.
The most DUI arrests for the week were in Kona, with 7. That district also has the distinction of having the most DUI arrests so far this year, with 203.

There had been a total of 594 DUI arrests through Sunday on the Big Island. That’s an increase of 0.85% compared to last year’s total of 589 by the same time of the year.
The Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 605 major crashes so far this year compared with 523 by the same time last year. That’s an increase of 15.7%.
There have been 19 fatal crashes resulting in 21 fatalities to date in 2024 compared with 9 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities by the same time last year. That’s an increase of 111.1% in fatal crashes and 110% in fatalities over 2023.
The non-traffic fatality count for this year, which are fatalities that did not happen on a public roadway, remains at zero, the same as this time in 2023.
