Big Island man facing charges following theft of all-terrain vehicle from Kea‘au High School

A Mountain View man accused of stealing a John Deere all-terrain vehicle from Kea‘au High School was granted supervised release by a Hilo District Court judge.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ha‘aheo Chan made his initial court appearance on Monday on charges of first-degree theft and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. In custody on $35,000 bail, the judge granted supervised release over the prosecution’s objections and ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 19.

The theft charge is a class B felony and carries a penalty of a 10-year prison term or four years probation and up to 18 months in jail.

The charge for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle is a class C felony and carries a penalty of a 5-year prison term or four years probation and up to 12 months in jail.
