8:28 a.m. Sunday update: The wind advisory issued for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits is canceled.

Original post: A wind advisory was issued for Big Island summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea till 4 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu reports that northeast to east winds of 40 to 45 mph are anticipated with gusts up to 70 mph.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking difficult. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

Officials advise those interested in traveling to the summits to postpone their trip till conditions improve.
