20 motorists arrested for DUI during week of July 22-28 on Big Island roads
The Hawai‘i Police Department continues its crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways, making 20 DUI arrests during the week of July 22-28.
Nine of those drivers were involved in traffice crashes. Four of them were younger than 21 years old.
Kona had the most DUI arrests during the week with 8. Hilo came in at a close second with 6 followed by Puna with 5. There have been a total of 564 DUI arrests so far this year around the island.
That’s 1.6% more than the 555 police had made by this time last year.

The Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crash records and found there have been 565 major crashes so far this year. That’s a 16.3% increase from the 486 crashes by this time last year.
As of Tuesday, there had been 18 fatal crashes on the Big Island this year that resulted in 20 deaths. That’s a 100% increase for fatal crashes and deaths since last year at this time, when there had been 9 fatalities and 10 deaths.
Fortunately, there have been no non-traffic fatalities, those not on a public roadway, so far in 2024.
