Police arrest 20 motorists for DUI week of July 8-14 on Big Island roadways
The Hawai‘i Police Department’s crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways continues.
Police arrested 20 motorists for DUI during the week of July 8-14. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
So far this year, there has been a total of 525 DUI arrests on the island compared with 526 during the same period last year, representing a decrease of 0.2%.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 533 major crashes so far this year compared with 455 during the same time frame last year. This represents an increase of 17.1%.
There have been 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities, so far in 2024 compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, during the same time period in 2023. This represents an increase of 100% for fatal crashes and 100% for fatalities.
There have been no non-traffic fatalities so far this year, the same as at this point last year.
