Update at 12:04 p.m. June 20: The Hawai‘i Department of Health canceled the high bacteria notification for Kua Bay. The department said water sample retesting results showed enterococci levels no longer exceed the threshold level.

Original post from 2 p.m. June 18: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health is retesting waters at Kua Bay after high levels of bacteria were detected during routine beach monitoring.

Levels of 306 per 100 mL were detected, according to the DOH. The state is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample.

This beach has historically met the acceptable beach threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination. Therefore, DOH has collected another sample and is retesting the site. DOH will update the notification based on the results of this retesting.
