The Hawai‘i Police Department (HPD) has announced that Lieutenant Jeremy Scott Lewis has graduated as a member of the 289th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on March 15, 2024.

The HPD released the news in a statement on Friday, June 7, which said Lewis is one of 197 law enforcement officers from 47 states, the District of Columbia, and 23 countries who graduated from this year’s program.

“Internationally known for its academic excellence, the FBI National Academy is a 10-week program of professional study and physical training for U.S. and international law enforcement managers,” the HPD said in the statement.

The HPD said they nominated Lewis to attend based on demonstrated leadership qualities. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program, the department noted.

In addition to the professional training, FBI National Academy attendees undergo fitness training and graduates undergo their final fitness challenge on the “Yellow Brick Road,” a grueling 6.1-mile run through a hilly, wooded trail built by US Marines.

Along the way, Academy attendees must climb over walls, run through creeks, jump through simulated windows, scale rock faces with ropes, crawl under barbed wire in muddy water, maneuver across a cargo net, and more.

On average, Academy attendees have 21 years of law enforcement experience. The HPD said they have nominated several officers to attend the Academy since 1947, with 10 graduates currently ranging in rank from Lieutenant to Police Chief.

“Congratulations to Lieutenant Lewis on successfully completing the esteemed FBI National Academy. His hard work and commitment to excellence embody the high standards we strive for in Hawaii Police Department,” said Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz. “Successfully graduating the National Academy is a testament to Lieutenant Lewis‘ exceptional skills and determination.: The Chief also graduated from the FBI National Academy during his tenure with the Honolulu Police Department.

Lieutenant Lewis has served the HPD for more than 23 years, starting his career as a patrol officer in both North Kohala and Kona. In 2005 he was assigned to the Area II Vice Section as a Police Officer III. In 2015 Lewis was promoted to Sergeant/Detective and assigned to the Area II Vice Section and subsequently Kona Patrol. In 2023, he was promoted to Lieutenant in Kona Patrol where he currently is assigned to “B“ watch.  He was also attached to the Special Response Team (SRT) from 2011 untill 2023.

“I feel deeply honored and privileged to have been selected to attend the prestigious FBI National Academy, where I had the chance to learn from, and collaborate with, some of the finest law enforcement professionals in the world,” said Lieutenant Lewis.
