1:28 p.m. update June 4: Both lanes of Kawaihae Road near mile marker 61 are reopened. No cows were injured in the crash.

Original post: A semi truck and trailer hauling 60 cattle flipped over this morning forcing a portion of Kawaihae Road to close in both directions.

It is unknown at this time if any cows were injured. The driver is OK, according to Hawai‘i Fire Department.

The roadway, near mile marker 61, will be closed for several hours while crews work to remove the semi and cattle off the road. Hawai‘i Island police advise motorists to use alternate routes.
