3:41 p.m. May 7 update: The high wind warning for Big Island summits has been extended to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Original post: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island.

The warning is in effect until 6 p.m. today.

Southwest winds of 50 to 60 mph are forecast atop the mountains, with localized gusts of about 70 mph.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

The public is advised to postpone travel to the summits until conditions improve. Be prepared for road closures.
