17 motorists arrested for DUI during week of April 22-28 on Big Island
Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.
Seventeen motorists were arrested for DUI during the week of April 22-28. Five were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 308 DUI arrests compared with 329 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4%.
The Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 321 major crashes so far this year compared with 298 during the same time frame in 2023, representing an increase of 7.7%.
To date, there have 14 fatal crashes so far this year on Big Island roadway, resulting in 16 fatalities, compared with seven fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, during the same period last year. That represents 100% increases for fatal crashes and fatalities.
The non-traffic fatality count so far in 2024 is zero, the same number by this time in 2023.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
