Wind advisory issued for Big Island summits
If you’re planning a trip anytime soon to the summits of Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa on the Big Island, be prepared to get a more than a proper blowout.
The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the summits until 6 p.m. April 20, as west winds of 40 to 50 mph, with localized gusts of more than 60 mph, are forecast atop the mountains.
Winds that strong can make driving and walking difficult. They also can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.
The public is advised to consider postponing travel to the summits until conditions improve. If you must travel to the summits, use extra caution walking and driving and be careful opening or closing doors.
