Big Island police arrest 14 motorists for DUI during week of March 4-10

The Hawai’i Police Department continues its crackdown on people who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.

During the week of March 4-10, police arrested 14 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 184 DUI arrests compared with 203 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4%.

The Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 182 major crashes so far this year compared with 179 during the same time last year, an increase of 1.7%.

There have been 7 fatal crashes resulting in 7 fatalities so far this year compared with 4 fatal crashes resulting in 5 fatalities during the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 75% for fatal crashes and 40% for fatalities.

To date in 2024, there have been no non-traffic fatalities, or those that happen on a non-public roadway, compared to none during the same time frame last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
