Update: Flood advisory issued for  North and South Hilo, Puna Districts

Mar. 3 6:04 p.m. update: The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for North and South Hilo, and Puna Districts.

Rainfall of up to 1 inch per hour is being experienced over areas of the eastern side of Hawaii Island. 

River and stream gauges are indicating a rise in rainfall.

Due to the Flood Advisory, be advised:

  • Stay away from rivers, streams, and low-lying areas where rainfall and flooding occur.
  • Residents in flood prone areas, take precautions for heavy rain and potential flooding.
  • Be aware that road closures may occur without notice.
  • Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around don’t drown.
  • Remember, if lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

The County of Hawai‘i sent out an alert message just before 9:30 a.m. stating:

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flash flooding to occur.  Flash Flooding is life-threatening.

The National Weather Service may also issue Flood Warnings and Advisories for specific areas of Hawaii Island while the Flood Watch is in effect.  

Due to the Flood Watch, be advised:

  • Residents in flood prone areas, take this time to prepare for possible heavy rains and potential flooding.
  • Be aware that road closures may occur without notice.
  • Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around don’t drown.
  • Remember, if lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.
