4:18 p.m. Feb. 8 update: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health has canceled the notification for Kailua Pier. Water sample retesting results show that enterococci levels no longer exceed the threshold level.

Original post: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health is retesting waters at Kailua Pier after high levels of bacteria were identified.

Levels of 500 per 100 mL were detected during routine beach monitoring. The state agency is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample since the beach has historically met the acceptable beach threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination.

As a result, the Department of Health has collected another sample and is retesting the site. An update will provided once the results are in.
