Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park releases February flight operations
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for February 2024.
Management of the park requires using aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources and maintain backcountry facilities.
Flight operations will occur on the following days:
Feb. 5 and 8: From 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for transporting sling loads and crew for invasive guinea grass control work in the coastal backcountry from sea level to 2,400-foot elevation.
Feb. 20: From 6:30 toligh 8:30 a.m. for ungulate survey in Kahuku between 4,000- and 6,000-foot elevation.
Feb. 21: From 8 to 9 a.m. for endangered plant recovery in Kahuku between 3,500- and 7,500-foot elevation.
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
