Update: Big Island summits to remain under wind warning through Friday evening

7:13 a.m. Jan. 26 update: A high wind warning for Big Island summits has been extended again till 6 p.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, west winds of 55 to 65 mph are expected with higher gusts.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

3:51 p.m. Jan. 25 update: The high wind warning issued for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa has been extended until 6 a.m. Friday.

Westerly winds over the summits and upper slopes of the Big Island will remain dangerously strong through tonight.

Original post: A high wind warning will be issued for Big Island summits starting at 4 p.m. and going till 6 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, strong and gusty southwest winds are expected through this afternoon in the lower elevations of the smaller islands as a cold front moves down the island chain.

Over Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, west winds will gradually increase through the day, strengthening to 40 to 60 mph winds by tonight. Gusts near 80 mph are expected.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries. Be prepared for road closures.

Postpone travel to the summits until conditions improve.
