Hawai‘i Island police arrest 17 motorists for DUI the week of Jan. 8-14

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Jan. 8-14.

Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was under the age of 21. Kona District has the most arrests with nine. Hilo had three.

So far this year, there have been 35 DUI arrests compared with 45 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.2%.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 33 major crashes so far this year, compared with 41 during the same time last year, a decrease of 19.5%.

To date, there have been three fatal crashes, resulting in three fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

To date, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island-wide.
