Kona man faces auto theft, drug charges after police see him driving stolen vehicle

A 29-year-old Kailua-Kona man was arrested and charged earlier this week with auto theft and drug offenses after police spotted him driving a stolen vehicle Sunday afternoon in Kona.

Adam Krilla was arrested just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday by Kona patrol officers after he was seen operating a 2013 Hyundai sedan that was reported stolen the evening of Jan. 4 from the Kealakekua area.

The front license plate on the sedan did not match the rear plate and neither license plate belonged to the vehicle Krilla was driving. Both plates were reported stolen during separate instances between Jan. 3 and 8 in Kona.

Upon his arrest, 0.9 of a gram of suspected methamphetamine was found on Krilla, while another 0.48 of a gram of suspected meth and a glass smoking pipe were recovered from within the stolen vehicle.

Krilla was charged with:

  • First-degree theft.
  • First-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
  • Two counts of fourth-degree theft.
  • Two counts of third-degree promoting a dangerous drug.
  • Prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia.

His bail was set at $11,200. Krilla remained in police custody until his initial court appearance Tuesday in Kona District Court.
