3:32 p.m. Jan. 18 update: High wind warning for Big Island summits is canceled.

Original post: A high wind warning is in effect for Big Island summits till 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, west winds of 65 to 80 mph with higher gusts up to 100 mph are expected this morning, diminishing to 55 to 65 mph with gusts up to 80 mph in the afternoon.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

Officials advise postponing conditions to the summits until they improve.
