Update: Wind advisory canceled for West Hawai‘i, high surf advisory extended for north shoreline
3:48 p.m. update on Jan. 12: A high surf advisory for north-facing shore was extended through Saturday evening.
High surf will peak Saturday morning and diminish throughout the day.
9:51 a.m. update on Jan. 12: A wind advisory for lower elevations of the Big Island is canceled, however, a wind warning is now in effect for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits till Saturday at 6 a.m.
West winds of 60 to 80 mph with gusts near 90 mph are expected, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. Winds will begin to gradually diminish overnight tonight.
Original post: A cold front moving across Hawai‘i Island has brought severe weather conditions that will continue through the day.
A wind advisory for Kohala, Kona and Ka‘ū Districts along with the island interiors is expected through Friday night. A high surf advisory for north-facing shores continues through Saturday morning.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms are also possible today.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a large swell is approaching from the north and northwest which, in conjunction with higher-than-normal tides. Large breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet are expected.
This surf will likely bring minor to localized moderate coastal flooding both today and Saturday mornings.
Additional wave run-up is possible during the early morning high tides over the next couple of days due to higher-than-predicted tides.
