Big Island police arrest 16 motorists for DUI the week of Jan. 1-7

Big Island police continue to crack down on those who drive under the influence of intoxicants on island roadways.

During the week of Jan. 1-7, police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. None were younger than 21. That’s a 38.5% decrease from the 26 DUI arrests made during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 16 major crashes so far this year compared with 22 during the same time last year, a decrease 27.3%. There was one fatal crash during the week, resulting in one fatality, compared with none during the same time period last year.

There were no non-traffic fatalities from Jan. 1-7, the same amount as last year.
