Update: Wind advisory canceled on the Big Island

4:12 p.m. update on Jan. 9: The National Weather Service has canceled the wind advisory on Hawai‘i Island. A flood advisory is still in place.

2:07 p.m. update on Jan. 9: Gusty showers will continue to impact portions of Hawai‘i County through 2:30 p.m.

At 1:59 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking a line of heavy showers with gusty winds over Nā‘ālehu moving northeast at 40 mph. This weather will move toward Pāhala and Wood Valley.

Other impacted areas include Kawa Flats, Punalu‘u Beach, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Discovery Harbour and Waiohinu.

11:16 a.m. update on Jan. 9: A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Hawai‘i Island till 11:30 a.m.

At 10:42 a.m., a thunderstorm was moving onshore at South Point and traveling to the northeast at 20 mph toward Nā‘ālehu. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are expected. Impacted areas include:

Kawa Flats
Nā‘ālehu
Punalu‘u Beach
Discovery Harbor
Waiohinu

Original post: The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Hawai‘i Island for the North Kohala, South Kohala, South Kona and North Kona Districts through Tuesday evening.

South winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected with localized gusts of more than 50 mph. According to the National Weather Service, winds will be strongest near Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport.

Winds this strong can knock down tree branches, and blow away unsecured objects. Strong gusts can make it difficult to drive, especially for high-profile vehicles.
