A magnitude-3.6 earthquake just offshore of Kailua-Kona rattled West Hawai‘i on Friday night.

At 9:21 p.m., the tumbler struck 2 miles west-southwest of Hōlualoa at a depth of about 8 miles below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on Hualālai, Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes.

Approximately 1 minute later, a magnitude-3.4 earthquake occurred on the east side of the Island 12 miles north of Pāhala at a depth of 4 miles below sea level. According Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, this quake was likely not related to the one near Hōlualoa as it occurred in a different structural section of the island, but it too had no apparent impact on any of the nearby volcanoes.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
