Big Island Now poll no. 28: Did you make the trip to see the latest Kīlauea eruption?
Thousands flock to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park when Tutu Pele awakens Kīlauea summit bringing spectacular views of fountaining lava and a lake of fire.
The eruption at Kīlauea’s caldera that started on Sept. 10 stopped Saturday. Officials with Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say it is unlikely to restart. This is the fifth eruption event at the caldera since 2020. It is also the shortest event in the past three years.
Many people took the trip to the park to see the volcano to capture footage of the natural phenomenon. On Sept. 13, local filmmakers Blake and Brent Cousins Thirdphaseofmoon captured the dynamic lava fountains. The video above shows their footage of the spattering lava up close as a lake of lava flowed along the Halema‘uma‘u crater floor.
“Filming the newest lava emerge always takes your breath away,” they said.
