5:36 p.m. Thursday update: West Kawailani between Kilaha Streets and Komohana Street in Hilo is now open. 

Original post: The Hawaii Police Department is advising motorists to avoid West Kawailani Street in Hilo due to a current traffic issue.

A large truck has struck and downed a utility pole on West Kawailani Street between Kilaha Street and Komohana Street and will require a detour of traffic for the next 3 hours to enable crews to clear the pole.

West Kawailani Street is closed in both directions. Motorists are advised to detour using Haihai Street.
